      How it works

Sinus Relief is based on a Chinese herbal formula called Cang Er Zi San, used to treat symptoms arising as a result of environmentally triggered rhinitis or sinusitis. It is effective for both acute and chronic conditions involving nasal discharge and sinus pain.

This formula has also been used as an adjunct to the treatment of nasal adenocarcinoma to control nasal discharge. It is also effectively used in horses to treat nasal discharge from rhinopneumonitis and influenza, or the commonly-seen “snotty nose” in young horses.

One of the primary herbs in the formula, Flos Magnoliae, has been shown to have localized astringent, vasodilator and antiphlogistic effects on the nasal mucosa along with a moderate antimicrobial action. The other primary herb, Xanthium fruit, has demonstrated hypoglycaemic, antitussive and mild anti-bacterial actions.

      Traditional understanding

Fructus Xanthiii and Flos Magnoliae are frequently combined to unblock the nasal passages. Radix Angelicae Dahuricae and Herba Menthae combine to relieve sinus pain caused by wind, as Radix Angelicae Dahuricae opens the nasal passages, dispels wind and clears pus while Herba Menthae assists to release wind and heat from the surface of the body. Bulbus Allii Fistulosi and Folium Camelliae are added to enhance the overall effects of the formula by adding to the cooling, dispersing and antibacterial nature of the formula.

In TCM, wind is an environmental factor that triggers symptoms affecting the skin, orifices and respiratory tract. Conditions caused by wind are characterized by their rapid onset and tendency to itch, change location or recur seasonally.
